Dead By Daylight Movie Gets Uncertain (& Hopeful) Update From Jason Blum: “You Just Don’t Know”

The possibility of a Dead By Daylight movie has received an update from producer Jason Blum. The multiplayer survival horror video game was first released in 2016 as a one-versus-four game, where four players take on the role of survivors, while one controls a vicious killer who must hunt down the survivors. Blum’s production company Blumhouse Productions first announced plans for a Dead By Daylight movie adaptation in March 2023, with Saw director James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company also producing.

In an interview with Comicbook.com at the New York Comic Con, Blum provides an update on the potential future of the Dead By Daylight movie, that is both uncertain and hopeful. The Paranormal Activity producer was asked if there was any update on the movie, before confirming that the script is currently being worked on, and the project will move forward only when the script is right. He also mentions it took 10 years to make Five Night’s at Freddy’s because they wanted to get the script right, so that is the most important thing. Check out Blum’s comments below:

It took 10 years to make Five Nights at Freddy’s, and I think one of the reasons the movie worked is because we spent 10 years trying to get it right. I hope we get a script that we love. We’re working on a script, but it could be five years, it could be 12 months. You just don’t know. You can’t make the movie until the script is right, and you don’t know how long that’ll take.

Nothing Is A Guarantee In The Movie Industry

Many will view the producer’s comments as frustratingly vague, but the nature of Hollywood, and the filmmaking industry at large, is that everything takes time, and nothing is certain until it’s actually released. The fact that there is a discussion about getting the script right, and that the possibility of a Dead By Daylight movie even happening at all, is a positive sign, as it suggests there is interest in making the movie. But this is a project that feels very far from fruition, and might not even happen with Blum or his production company.

The fact that Blumhouse Productions spent a decade trying to make sure Five Night’s at Freddy’s would be a box office hit proves that Blum and his company are prepared to take their time with projects, until they believe they are ready. If Dead by Daylight does happen, it will only be once the studio believes it is going to work, and, with the game having enjoyed more than 60 million online players, and selling over five million copies, appealing to a dedicated fanbase is going to be essential.

Adapting video games for the big screen can be notoriously challenging to do in a way that appeases the legacy fanbase, while also making a movie that is accessible to those who have never played the game. I think a Dead By Daylight movie adaptation is going to be a challenging project, particularly with the number of different killers that could be introduced. However, it seems Blumhouse has learned from the mistakes made with Five Night’s at Freddy’s, and there is a desire to make a video game adaptation for the fans, which bodes well for Dead By Daylight‘s prospects.
