Adewale Oguntade, the Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer, aka Ajimovoix Drums, who is the brain behind the popular Focus Dance instrumental, has said many of the artistes he initially pitched the beat to rejected it.

Focus Dance is an instrumental that is usually danced to by nodding one’s head and pointing one’s hands forward.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, Ajimovoix said, “The Focus Dance instrumental was inspired by a night of outing with some friends. They had insisted that we should go to a nightclub to have fun because I’m mostly an indoor person. After we got back from the club, I tried to compress all the sounds I heard into one instrumental. However, it was rejected by many artistes I pitched it to and that really discouraged me for about three years before it went viral this year.

“Nobody can predict the success of a song or instrumental, no matter the energy one put into it. The first positive comments I heard about it were from 9ice and Lil Kesh. They said it would be a hit and I should just give it to the street and watch it blow up. Those words really encouraged me to eventually release it on my own.”

Speaking on some of the benefits he has derived from the instrumental, he said, “So many things have really changed for me since Focus Dance ‘blew up’. Artistes and producers I dreamt of working with now call me for collaborations, and I am very glad about that. People like Don Jazzy, Masterkraft, Burna Boy, Spellz, Baba Rex have sent me messages on social media to congratulate me. I have also secured many deals through that instrumental.”

Reeling out some of his current projects, Ajimovoix said, “I am currently working on myself and making more sounds. Right now, I have a new instrumental titled, Donda Dance, and it is doing quite well.”
