Invisible Man 2 Addressed By Original Director After Elisabeth Moss’ Positive Update

The Invisible Man 2 gets a new update from original movie director Leigh Whannell, and it’s not good news. Based on the iconic Universal monster, The Invisible Man was released in 2020, with Elisabeth Moss starring as Cecilia, a woman being hunted by her abusive ex-boyfriend. The film was a hit critically and commercially, and the ending leaves the door open for more story, but few concrete updates have emerged about a potential Invisible Man 2. Moss addressed the sequel earlier this year, saying that they are “closer than [they] have ever been” to making the movie happen.

During a recent interview at New York Comic Con with ComicBook.com, Whannell shares a new update on The Invisible Man 2, revealing that he seemingly won’t be involved if the sequel does happen. While he admits that Universal and Moss could certainly make a sequel without him, he expresses satisfaction with where he closed off Cecilia’s story in the original movie. “With Invisible Man, I really felt good about where we ended, for me. I don’t own the IP for
Invisible Man
so Universal can make a sequel if they want to – but for me, as a filmmaker, I really think that was a closed story. I can’t see that there’s any more story to tell.”

How The First Invisible Man Was Received

After making a name for himself by writing and starring in Saw (2004), Whannell directed Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015). It was with Upgrade in 2018, however, that Whannell’s unique filmmaking style was on full display, and The Invisible Man cemented him as an exciting horror director. The film, which was widely praised for Whannell’s signature camera motion and its constant sense of unease and dread, currently sports a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office success, grossing $144.5 million on an estimated budget of only $7 million.

Whannell’s directing talents will next be seen in Blumhouse’s Wolf Man, which is set to release next year, and The Invisible Man 2 seemingly faces an uphill battle without him. Even if Moss and her team can crack the story, Whannell’s involvement is a major reason why The Invisible Man‘s reviews were so glowing. Without him, the sequel could struggle to recapture the same magic of the original.

That being said, if a strong story can be devised that continues Cecilia’s story in an interesting way, it could still be exciting to see The Invisible Man 2. Though Whannell seemingly wouldn’t be involved, it’s possible that another talented director could be brought on board to put their own signature sense of style on the IP, reinventing it once more. It remains to be seen whether the sequel will actually ever happen, but audiences should evidently expect some big changes if it does.
