David Lowery, one of the creators and directors behind Star Wars’ next TV show, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, has confirmed that a species from a 1980s Star Wars TV movie will be returning to the galaxy after nearly 40 years. While there are still plenty of secrets about Skeleton Crew‘s story, one thing is glaringly clear: the TV show is evoking the feeling of 1980s coming-of-age stories. With Skeleton Crew‘s Goonies-esque cast of characters, the setup for this TV show is already spectacular. Now, they’re adding one more element that elevates this feeling even more.
In speaking with Empire, Lowery revealed that the Teek species from the 1985 TV movie The Battle for Endor will be returning to the Star Wars galaxy. In describing the balance between using advanced special effects and “ancient” technology, Lowery used his Teek character as an example of an older process. “There’s a character in my episode that’s […] the Teek, from Battle For Endor,” Lowery said. “And it’s just a little hand puppet!” Lowery also shared that this Teek character will appear in the final episode of the series, within the greater Volume set.
The Teek are a species native to the forest moon of Endor, known for their super-speed abilities.

Star Wars has been steadily reincorporating Star Wars Legends material back into canon ever since the new continuity began in 2014, and this is an example of it being done in the most perfect way. As a Star Wars TV show that’s seeking to capture the familiarity and charm of the 1980s, choosing to bring back a species as niche as the Teek from a 1980s TV movie is incredible. This gives them something fresh yet familiar to work with, exciting viewers who may not know the Teek while satisfying those who do.

They’re Already Capturing This Nostalgic Feeling
Above all, though, this decision to bring back the Teek is yet another genius move to make Skeleton Crew truly feel like a 1980s TV show. The Teek are far from the first Easter egg that refers back to both Star Wars and generic Lucasfilm lore from the 1980s; the first trailer for Skeleton Crew also included Easter eggs for George Lucas’ Captain EO short film, which starred Michael Jackson. This, however, is another step in the right direction for Skeleton Crew, as it’s borrowing from something directly Star Wars related that has likely been mostly forgotten.
Skeleton Crew is already making great strides in becoming a unique success for Star Wars by taking familiar ideas and inspiration from real-world stories and folding them into the franchise. Star Wars is one of the most perfect universes to blend 1980s stories into, given the fact that most of the original trilogy was created and released during that same time period. The Teek coming back is yet another promising piece of evidence that the minds behind Skeleton Crew truly know what they’re doing, and that many viewers will be in for a surprise with this TV show.
