The United States Global AIDS Coordinator , Ambassador – at – large , Deborah Birx , on Friday signed the $ 469 m Nigeria HIV/ AIDS Country Operational Plan, 2017 .
US Ambassador to Nigeria , Stuart Symington , and the Director – General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS , Dr . Sani Aliyu , also co -signed the document at a brief ceremony in Abuja .
The Country Operational Plan is an annual programme plan for US government investments in the Nigeria National HIV /AIDS Response through the US President ’ s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief , a statement from the Information Office , US Embassy , said.
The Country Operational Plan 2017 is expected to support HIV prevention , care , and treatment programmes in the country .
The US ambassador described it as a historic occasion , representing the first time such an agreement was signed in the focus country .
“ Right here, right now , in this effort, Nigerians working with the United States can change the course of Nigeria ’s history forever when it comes to health,” Symington said .
Birx explained the historic importance of the event , stating that the reasons for the US ’ support for the Country Operational Plan are two- fold, which are to represent the depth and breadth of the ( Donald ) Trump Administration’ s commitment to HIV/ AIDS prevention and treatment , and to represent the depth and breadth of the commitment to Nigeria and to the Nigerian government ’ s “ ability to do something big at this moment in time . ”
She said , “ I personally have been impressed with the Minister of Health. I have been impressed by your new leadership in the NACA . I have been impressed with its ability to hit the ground running , to understand where we don ’t have the depth of knowledge that we need to ensure that all Nigerians can thrive free of HIV. ”
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian government , the NACA DG said the government and people of Nigeria deeply appreciated US government ’ s assistance to the country on HIV /AIDS control .
