Godwin Emefiele is a Nigerian economist and banker who has served as the 12th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) since June 2014. He was born on August 4, 1961, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Tribe, state of origin

Godwin Emefiele is from Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria. In Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone is the State of Delta. The state, which is mainly within it and bears its name, was created on August 27, 1991, out of the former Bendel State. Bayelsa State surrounds the state to the south, Edo State to the north, Anambra and Rivers States to the east, and Edo State to the west. Emefiele attended Ansar Udin Primary School and Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School, both in Lagos. He then proceeded to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Banking and Finance. He also holds an MBA from the University of Port Harcourt and an MPA from Harvard University.

career

After graduating from UNN, Emefiele worked as a lecturer in finance and insurance at the University of Port Harcourt. He then joined Zenith Bank Plc in 1994, where he rose through the ranks to become the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in 2007. He served in this position until he was appointed Governor of the CBN in 2014.

As Governor of the CBN, Emefiele has implemented a number of policies aimed at stabilizing the Nigerian economy. These policies have included the introduction of a new foreign exchange regime, the establishment of a Sovereign Wealth Fund, and the promotion of agricultural production. Emefiele has also been a vocal critic of the government’s borrowing binge, which he has warned could lead to a debt crisis.

In 2023, Emefiele, the governor of Nigeria’s central bank, disobeyed the Central Bank Act, which mandates that the governor must always maintain an apolitical and neutral posture in order to maintain the bank’s nonpartisan status.

However, this led to his sack by the new government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023.

Emefiele sparked controversy when it was learned in May 2022 that he was running for Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s position in the 2023 presidential election.

A group of purported rice farmers allegedly obtained the APC’s presidential form for the CBN Governor, which gave rise to the notion that the bank’s governor was running for office that first surfaced in Abuja as campaign posters.
